I am my father's son. In our family we affectionately addressed him as Darjee. He was a distinguished man in scholarship, spirit and with many excellent attributes and a divinely-inspired persona. He was kind, humble, gentle, and deeply devoted to his faith, family, and lived his faith in service and lifting the burdens of others with his deep compassion, understanding, and words of wisdom that seem to come from ...the depth of his conviction. He was in touch with the commandments, lessons, and spirit of faiths and spiritual traditions. I learned all that I am and know from his personal testimony of grace, righteous labor, and devotion to sacred values of loving, sharing, respecting and kindness toward all. I remember my father with deep gratitude and thanksgiving for my good fortune to be loved and mentored by such a wonderful father and teacher.
I loved my father, as many of you do, and I venerate him as someone who graced my life and spirit, and pray that his lessons and values may continue to be part of my life. I am not him; he was the sun, I am only an earthen lamp. I think of him as the dawn breaks and the birds begin their symphony of Praise; the flowers wake up to share their fragrance with the entire world; as the sun goes down and the birds return to their nest in time for Rehras (the Sikh evening prayer); the moon and stars appear to begin their rendezvous in the vast sky with countless galaxies dancing across the cosmic realms to unimagined celestial music and rhythms. I often wonder, which corner of this unfathomable heaven, the Wonderful Lord has assigned my father an eternal resting place!
My beloved Darjee's words come alive when the rains come and nurture the Mother Earth; the life-giving air blows across the continents for all beings without distinction; when I see tragedy and suffering, as we did during the Partition of India and lost everything; I pause to reflect on his reminder that life is a promise and gift with unexpected downs and undreamed-of triumphs; not yesterday, but today and life matters. Strive, excel, and rejoice in the blessings that surround you and others will follow.
For me, as a father of two wonderful sons and having a life partner with exceptional talents and enlightened spirit, every day is Father's Day. Each of you love, remember, and honor your wonderful and distinguished fathers in your own way. I wish everyone a very happy and blessed Father's Day. God bless everyone
